Hot Issues

This page provides an update on major issues facing the Perry Hall community.

School Overcrowding. In September of 2007, Perry Hall High School had 2,321 students, 211 students over its capacity. The Perry Hall Improvement Association has advocated for a new high school in northeastern Baltimore County to relieve overcrowding at Perry Hall, Loch Raven, and Towson High Schools. A new high school would also accommodate the growth that is expected due to the military realignment and growth in the White Marsh Boulevard corridor. While county and state officials support a new school, the Baltimore County Executive has opposed it. Money included in the capital budget has not yet been spent to secure a site. This is a rendering of the new library.Perry Hall Library. The new Perry Hall library will be built near the intersection of Honeygo Boulevard and Forge Road. It will be a one-story building, designed to meet new environmental standards, with 25,000 square feet of space. Groundbreaking occurred in the spring of 2008, and the library is expected to be open in 2009.

Belair Road Improvements. In 2008, it is expected that the Maryland Department of Transportation will begin construction on major improvements to Belair Road from Cottington Road to India Avenue. The $3.2 million project involves changes to traffic signals, new sidewalks and gutters, and decorative street poles near Perry Hall Elementary School.

Honeygo Boulevard.   Groundbreaking occurred on the final section of Honeygo Boulevard, from Forge to Belair Road, in April of 2008.  The road is expected to be finished in the spring of 2009, providing a direct link between western Perry Hall and the White Marsh Town Center.

Perry Hall Parks. Construction has been delayed on Gough and Asbury Parks, two new recreational areas planned at the intersection of Honeygo Boulevard and Joppa Road. The Perry Hall Mansion was built in the 1770s. Groundbreaking was to have occurred in 2008, but will not happen due to funding problems.  There are two other properties that will eventually become parkland. One is at Chapel and Joppa Roads (the future Joppa Trail Park) and another is at Forge and Forge View Roads (the future Forge View Park).

Perry Hall Mansion. The Perry Hall Mansion is owned by the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks. It is expected that this historic landmark will become a community museum and meeting place, with limited uses and hours of operations. The exterior renovation is finished, but less than half the funding has been raised to complete interior improvements. A new organization, the Friends of the Perry Hall Mansion, was established to raise additional funding.
