Hot Issues
This page provides an update on major issues facing the Perry Hall community.
Perry Hall Square Shopping Center. The Perry Hall Improvement Association (PHIA) has long been concerned about the appearance and viability of this shopping center, the oldest in Perry Hall. The management of the shopping center has not discussed the future of the property with the PHIA. The PHIA has written to Baltimore County, urging the Department of Economic Development to engage the shopping center and advance the redevelopment of this site.
Perry Hall Parks. Construction has been delayed on Gough and Asbury Parks, two new recreational areas planned at the intersection of Honeygo Boulevard and Joppa Road. Groundbreaking was to have occurred in 2008, but will not happen due to funding problems. There are two other properties that will eventually become parkland. One is at Chapel and Joppa Roads (the future Joppa Trail Park) and another is at Forge and Forge View Roads (the future Forge View Park).
School Overcrowding. The Perry Hall Improvement Association has advocated for a new high school in northeastern Baltimore County to relieve overcrowding at Perry Hall, Loch Raven, and Towson High Schools. A new high school would also accommodate the growth that is expected due to the military realignment and growth in the White Marsh Boulevard corridor. While county and state officials support a new school, the Baltimore County Executive has opposed it. Money included in the capital budget has not yet been spent to secure a site.
Perry Hall Mansion. The Perry Hall Mansion is owned by the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks. It is expected that this historic landmark will become a community museum and meeting place, with limited uses and hours of operations. The exterior renovation is finished, but less than half the funding has been raised to complete interior improvements. A new organization, the Friends of the Perry Hall Mansion, was established to raise additional funding.
